Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup milk

1 large egg

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup cooked sausage, crumbled (breakfast sausage or your choice)

Cooking spray or additional oil for greasing the waffle iron

Optional: Fresh chives or green onions, finely chopped, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Waffle Iron: Plug in your waffle iron and set it to medium heat. If your waffle iron is non-stick, a light spray of cooking oil might not be necessary, but it won't hurt to do so for easier release.

Prepare the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper until they are well mixed and free of lumps.

Mix the Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, combine the milk, egg, and vegetable oil. Whisk them together until the mixture is smooth and fully incorporated.

Incorporate the Mixtures: Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients. Gently stir until just combined—be careful not to overmix; it's okay if the batter has a few lumps.

Fold in Cheese and Sausage: Carefully add the shredded sharp cheddar cheese and crumbled sausage to the batter, folding them in with a spatula until evenly distributed.

Cook the Waffles: Lightly grease the waffle iron with cooking spray or a little oil. Pour approximately 1/4 cup of batter onto the center of the waffle iron. Close the lid and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically for about 3-5 minutes, or until the waffles are golden brown and firm to the touch.

Keep Warm: Once cooked, remove the waffle rounds and place them on an oven-safe plate in a preheated low oven (around 200°F or 93°C) to keep warm while you finish cooking the remaining batter.

Presentation and Serving: When all waffle rounds are cooked, serve them warm. Garnish with finely chopped fresh chives or green onions if desired, and enjoy them as they are or serve with your favorite syrup or dipping sauce for an extra flavor boost!
